The Australian Dictionary of Invisible Culture for Teachers

personal autonomy

value: many people in Australia think it is good if people can think like this (see more)

Everyone can say “I want this, I don't want this.” “I think this, I don't think this.”

I know: If someone says something, they say it because they want to say it.

I can't say to someone “You have to do X because I want it.” “You can't do X because I don't want it.”

Note

This is a key concept of Anglo English. This concept influences almost all other aspects of Australian culture discussed in this dictionary. This is a general value that is held, not necessarily a reality in all situations.
