The Australian Dictionary of Invisible Culture for Teachers

public holidays

noun: something (see more)

In Australia, it is like this:

Some days are not like other days. Not many days in a year are like this.

Often on these days, many people think about something that happened to many people in this country before. This something can be good, this something can be bad.

On these days, many people in Australia don’t work.

Note

'Public holidays' are often days of national significance (such as Australia Day, Anzac Day, etc), but not always (e.g. Christmas, Easter). They can also be days of local significance (such as Melbourne Cup Day) where the public holiday is only applicable to a certain area.

"Did you hear they're adding a new public holiday? It's in October, so we'll have two in two weeks!"

"I hate working in retail. You always have to work over the public holidays."

"It's not fair that Canberra has two extra public holidays a year compared to New South Wales."
