sickie

noun: something (see more)

At some times in Australia it can be like this:

Someone (e.g. Rod) says to the someone above him at the place where he works (i.e. his boss) “I feel sick. I can’t work at this time.” Because of this, Rod doesn’t have to work at this time.

Rod knows this is not true.

Rod says this because he wants to do something else at this time.

People think: it is bad to do this often.

"But I wanted to go camping on Friday. Can't you just chuck a sickie and come with us?"

"Businesses are cracking down on bogus sickies by forcing workers to phone approved nurses instead of going to their GP for a medical certificate."

"Far from 'chucking a sickie', if working full-time they will take just 4 days of sick leave per year (less than their entitlement)."
