responding to ‘how are you?’

norm: when it is like this, it is good to do some things (see more)

When someone (e.g. Jane) says the words “how are you?” to someone else (e.g. Fleur), it is good if Fleur says something like 'I'm well' to Jane.

It is good if Fleur says something like “how are you?” to Jane after this.

After this, both these people can say many things if they want to.

"Steve walks past Harold in the corridor. Harold says 'Hi Steve, how are you?' Steve says 'Fine thanks, and you?'. After this they do not have to say anything more."

"Tegan is at a party and her friend Joan arrives. Joan says 'Hi Tegan! How are you?' Tegan says 'I'm pretty good thanks, how about you?'. After this, they can talk for some time."
