The Australian Dictionary of Invisible Culture for Teachers

whinger

noun: a person of one kind (see more)

A kind of person.

People of this kind (e.g. Hugo) think something like this many times: Something bad is happening to me. I can’t do anything. I want someone else to do something because of this. If other people know how I feel, they can do something.

When something not very bad happens to people of this kind, they want other people to know it. Because of this, Hugo says many things to other people for some time.

Other people don’t want to hear people say things like this.

Many people in Australia think it is bad to be someone like this.

"Oh come on. Stop being such a whinger and let's come up with a plan."

"On the east coast they often think we're just whingers … but it is fighting the battle against that perception that is absolutely critical to getting a long-term solution to this problem."
