The Australian Dictionary of Invisible Culture for Teachers
saying what you want
norm: when it is like this, it is good to do some things (see more)
Many people in Australia think like this:
I can say “I want this” “I don’t want this”
I know: Other people don’t have to want the same.
No one can say “I want you to want this. You have to have this.”
"Would you like a coffee?' 'No thanks, I try not to have coffee in the afternoon.' 'No problem. Would you like something else instead?"
"Could I have a lemonade please?' 'Are you sure you don't want a wine?' 'Yeah, I have to drive home so lemonade for me. Feel free to have a wine yourself though."
