People know it can be like this: It can be very hot in this place. Many bad things can happen in this place if people don’t do many things. Bad things can happen if people don’t have water.

Many people think about this place like this: Very few people live in this place. Often when someone is in this place for some time, this person doesn’t see any other people during this time.

Note

It is interesting to note that the definition is mostly about the association with people, and the bad things which can befall people there, rather than the kinds of things one can do in 'the outback'.

"If we want to retain our extraordinary and distinctive wildlife, we need to break conservation out from beyond the bounds of National Parks to think and manage far larger landscapes. The outback works at such a scale."

"He said the ostrich was able to survive in the Australian outback because the climate is similar to Africa's."
