Someone (e.g. Matt) thinks something like this: Something bad happened to someone else (e.g. Ben). If something bad happens to me, I feel something bad. Because of this, I know Ben feels something bad now.
When Matt thinks like this, Matt feels something good towards Ben.
Because of this, Matt does some things good things for Ben, he doesn’t do other things.
